[Neopets] The curious case of Charity Corner 2020 and the sticky snowball

Background:
Neopets is a browser-based virtual pet and game site that took over the world in the late 90s and early 2000s. It's known for its Flash games, player-controlled economy, and nostalgia value. It has been sold to many different companies over the years- Viacom in 2005 for $160 million, and most recently JumpStart in 2014 for an undisclosed sum. Each change of company saw a little more removal from the original designers and developers, and a little less care taken in maintaining the site people are familiar with.
When JumpStart acquired the site in 2014, they had to migrate it to their servers, their *smaller* servers, and the site lost a lot of functionality people enjoyed. They closed Key Quest, a virtual board game that linked IRL plushies to player figurines and gave out sought-after prizes, Habitarium, a strategy/base management idle game, and many random site features. People are still discovering features that didn't "make it over", pages that are broken, and avatars (images that you customize your board posts with) that are no longer obtainable because the code is gone.
This frustrated and angered many loyal players as JumpStart gave no word that the migration would result in removal of so many popular and loved site features.
The features were never restored. In 2018 they hinted that Key Quest would return- but then in 2019 they announced the effort was cancelled.
Neopets celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, and has been working on several large projects to enrich the site- a town builder app, a match-3 app, and especially a mobile-friendly HTML5 version of the site due to the approaching Flash decommission.
In parallel with those long-term goals, players expect certain recurring events on the site, like the Altador Cup, an annual "World Cup" like sports event where users join teams from each region of the Neopets planet, Neopia, and compete in flash games to determine which Land wins, and the Advent Calendar, a month-long event in December where users view a new holiday-themed animation and collect related unique items.
It's unknown how many people are working on JumpStart Neopets versus the Viacom Neopets days, but it's rumored to be a smaller crew. The mobile games are being developed by a separate team in Canada. The NC wearables (real-money clothes for your pet) are made in India. But the actual site features are a mystery.
The reason this is relevant is because the events on the site require months of work ahead of time, and there are questions of if JumpStart Neopets can handle it at its current size.
This becomes apparent at every new event they try to host- because the userbase is sure to be loud and clear at things they do not like. Every event has taken a major cut in quality, especially ones that are less recyclable year-to-year.

Charity Corner:
A huge part of the Neopian experience is the economy, as its entirely player-controlled. Neopoints are the currency, earned by doing many things, playing Flash games, selling items, winning contests, doing "dailies"- small one-click HTML games that award prizes etc. The Flash games have a fixed Neopoint ratio per point earned in the game, and the NPC shops have an inflation rate that changes periodically. The NPC shops that randomly stock items at set price points, and users fight to be first to buy the "rare" and expensive items first. Then, they can resell the item for a high profit.
Dailies are something every user does every day. They give out a lot of items that are "junk"- worth so little because everyone ends up with 1000 of them kicking around in their Safety Deposit Box (SDB)- a place to hold extra items safely, that they have no value in the economy.
2014: Charity Corner is an event that was first started in 2014. It is centered around clearing out all the junk in Neopia by getting users to donate 5 items of certain rarity values in exchange for another single item of that rarity. This caused a lot of turmoil in the economy, because one could donate 5 Mallard Balloons at 1,200 Neopoints each and receive a Baby Techo Bobblehead worth 7,000,000 NP! So, due to supply and demand all the "cheap" items of the highest rarities quickly ballooned (pun unintended) to huge prices as people gambled for rare returns. Overall, it was seen by most as a good event and a cool way to obtain otherwise unobtainable items. Those who had the rare items to begin with saw it in a negative light for depreciating their worth.
The event returned each year with similar rules and prize mechanics.
2018: A big change was made this year- instead of giving 5 items for 1 item back, you would now redeem items for points. These points could be used at the end of the event to cash in on "perks"- less tangible rewards that modified your user experience. TNT did not list the perks prior to the end of the event, so they were a mystery.
One perk example is "Limited Edition" which would give you the ability to change one of your existing pets into a species that is hard to obtain/expensive. "Bank Bribery" would grant you 3% higher interest on the Neopoints in your bank account. Generally, these perks were extremely sought-after as they lasted the entire year and could allow people to more easily obtain their dream goals.

2019: The perks returned- this time allowing users to see the list while still donating.
Certain items in high rarities could be guaranteed from dailies, like an item called a Sticky Snowball that could be purchased from a special, infinitely-stocked healing item shop for 25 NP each. This transaction could be done every 30 minutes.
Because the event structure had not changed in the last few years, Neopians stockpiled these snowballs. People listed in their forum signatures how many they'd purchased- many in the THOUSANDS. Contrary to the event's purpose of getting rid of clutter, people were hoarding junk on purpose, either to give in the event for perks, or to sell during the event when the prices inflated for a tidy profit.

The Drama:
Ok guys, all caught up? Here's the drama now. It's 2020, and TNT has just unveiled the new Charity Corner for 2020 yesterday night. The theme for this year ties in to their new town-building app, and brings the world its set in into the broader Neopets game. And surprise! They took away the perks!
This year is still using a point system, but instead of redeeming for perks, points can be redeemed for prizes unique to the event. This ranges from a petpet (a pet... for your pet), to foods, to a stamp (these limited time event stamps are highly sought after due to the stamp-collecting book, once you put in a stamp you can never take it out again). But the most interesting items were "mystery capsules" of 3 different tiers.
These items are similar to the "give 5 get 1" mechanic, but it's more "give 187.5 get 1" to "give 500 get 1". This is because each single capsule costs 1500, 2500, and 4000 points respectively for each tier. And donating one item of a rarity 98-100 (the most points for the least NP), gives only 8 points.

Now, a Sticky Snowball is rarity 100, so users who spent every 30 min of the last year buying a snowball should be able to get 8 * 2000+ points, right? Well, no. TNT caught on to this get-rich-quick scheme and dropped a big surprise on everyone: Sticky Snowballs specifically were now only 1 point. 1 point!
To top it all off, if you DO buy one of these boxes after donating hundreds of items, do you at least get something cool like you could in 2014? Not really. TNT posted the chances for these boxes in the FAQ for the event, quoted below:

Notice how each has an 85% chance of giving a junk item (rarity 1-74), and paying 4000 points for the highest tier only gives you a 5% chance of getting anything above rarity 90 (1% for 95-99).
This is heinous compared to the give 5 get 1 method, where if you gave 5 items of rarity 90-100, you were *guaranteed* another item from that rarity level. It means that you could donate 500 1,000 NP items and get a single 500 NP item back. Not just *could*, but it's the most likely outcome!
The community went absolutely rabid yesterday because of these changes. Here are some choice posts on the Site Events board:

(Premium is an upgraded version of the site with no ads, other perks, that costs real money. About 2 dozen others also replied to say they also cancelled)

Consequences:
The economy is in shambles- Sticky Snowballs went from cheap to expensive and are now right back at cheap again. People with 5000 are crying. The Site Events board is on fire.
Everyone is frothing at the mouth, and the few people that like or try to defend it are promptly dismembered by the mob. People are cancelling their Premium memberships left and right. Others are downright quitting altogether. Many are boycotting the event and the mobile game its themed around. There are several "petitions" to fix the event.
Keep in mind that everyone in this situation are firmly adults, at least in their 20s. A nontrivial amount are over 50. Actually, that might be relevant to this post:
"this site is full of karens who are not happy with anything"
Will their outrage cause TNT to change the shop? Will they add perks? Will they reinstate the Sticky Snowball? Will they adjust the capsule chances?
Surely there is more to come here and I will edit to update.
Update 1:
Prize shop prices have changed! The 3 capsules have been cut to 10% their original price- so T1 is 400, T2 is 250, and T3 is 150. These prices are MUCH more reasonable- requiring only 50-100 items per box instead of 500. Other prices have also changed- for example, the stamp is 1,500 instead of 5,000.

This year, our dev team has been focusing their main efforts on converting the site in preparation for the end of Flash. This dev team is also responsible for working on all site events, including Charity Corner. In the interest of directing efforts towards the site's conversion and to avoid unforeseen site bugs and user difficulties due to perks, they were removed from the event.
We'd also like to address the issue of the sticky snowball items. This adjustment was made as a necessary balance change; the Charity Corner donation items are intended to be worth the same amount that it takes to obtain them, similar to the value of other snowball items on the site. The team never intended to intentionally obstruct the event due to this balance change, and we'd like to apologize for any miscommunication this change may have caused.
We've heard your comments and concerns regarding Charity Corner this year, and we'd like to make this right. Adjustments will be made to the prize shop; prices will be reduced on all prizes, and you'll be able to claim a free gift of 500 points to use in whichever purchase you wish. Most of these came from a topic that got deleted by the moderators- not because of the whining, but because the first post mentioned a different pet site and encouraged people to go there, which is against the rules.
Of course, people are seeing it instead as censorship of their demands.
Seems TNT can't win with this one guys- they apologized and adjusted things as asked and somehow everyone is MORE angry because they already spent points on something they were already so angry about.
The Karen comment from above is a little more relevant as people are now demanding a refund!

This is the second part of our charity corner update. If you spent points in the prize shop before we reduced the prices, you will be receiving a refund of the difference. Additionally if you visit the prize shop you can claim 500 free points by clicking on the little gift box in the lower right corner. Lastly please note that the prize shop will stay open during and after the event ends.

You’re receiving this Neomail because you purchased 1 or more Tier 1 Mystery Capsules during this year's Charity Corner event prior to this Sept 18th neomail. Recently, our team uncovered an internal issue that was causing the rarity drop rates of Tier 1 and Tier 3 Mystery Capsules to be switched. The issue has since been fixed; Tier 1 capsules will now properly grant higher rarity items at a higher rate, and Tier 3’s will grant the lowest.
We’d like to sincerely apologize to you for this oversight. Due to those previous balance issues, you have been re-granted the same amount of Tier 1 capsules that you previously purchased. You can now find those capsules, working with the correct drop rates, in your Inventory. Any existing Tier 1 capsules you had unopened will now have the corrected rates.

Hi all. Gutterfoot here. It's been a tough week for everyone and we know this years' Charity Corner isn't what any of us expected. There were a lot of issues that we should have been more on top of as well as things like server crashes completely outside of our control.
We've heard everyone's concerns on the Neoboards about the need for more open communication. I personally try to be on the Mobile Beta board as much as time permits me (as I am also a member of the dev team, not a full-time community manager), but it just isn't realistic for all of us. The problem is that the TNT you all see on the boards popping in ARE the dev team as well. Having us be constantly available for communication just isn't viable, especially not while that same team is responsible for both the conversion effort and keeping up with content/events.
Now, I know NONE of this is your problem. This is entirely a problem that TNT needs to handle and we promise that we're going to make an effort to communicate more openly. We want and value your feedback. I appreciate every user who participates on the Mobile Beta board, whether they have dedicated entire pet pages of feedback or just pop-in to report a bug they've noticed. It's all so incredibly helpful to our team.
Circling back to Charity Corner, refunds should be processed and the glitch that prevented some users from claiming their free 500 points should be solved. If anyone feels that their point totals aren't accurate, please send a support ticket and we will try to respond as quickly as possible before the event ends on the 28th of September. We have also fixed the issue where tier 1 and tier 3 mystery capsule drop rates were switched. Those who purchased tier 1 capsules have been reimbursed with new ones. And the capsules within your inventory/prize shop are now reflecting correct drop rates. There won't be any penalties at all since this was entirely our mistake, so everyone is safe. We know we can do better than this and we hope to regain your trust one step at a time.
Note: Today is International Talk like a Pirate Day, and Neopets has a forum filter that makes "see"-spy, you- ye, about- 'bout, etc. Any odd wording in these messages is just a result of that filter.

_Great question!_The tournaments are free to join since we are focusing on adoption and scaling the number of users we have globally. Bringing as many people to the platform is our priority right now. As we expand and offer user-generated prize pools we will take a commission on the total jackpots as a revenue stream. In addition, other revenue flows will become available to us as we build our user base and launch our video player this Q1.
We will monetize our esports content through our video player within Esports Fight Club by serving ads from our ad partners:
Advertiser Partnership Update
Esports Fight Club will require players to use VRA to purchase subscriptions via several payment systems: VeraWallet, PayPal and Credit Cards (although some tournaments are free for promotional purposes). Winners receive VRA for winning tournaments. Soon players will also be rewarded VRA for watching ads. Verasity profits from the purchase of game credits, subscriptions, tournament prize pools and ads. This is an entire ecosystem all within Verasity.

Adoption and scale are key to the success of Esports Fight Club. We’ve made a lot of progress on the platform and are confident we will continue to see further growth in terms of users and a ton more exposure to the platform, and our token $VRA.Talking about adoption and scale… the next question will answer that!~Q6) What is the current Marketing Strategy? How do we differ from other tournament websites?
After creating mass-scale events around the world, we are focusing on adoption and community this year. Spending $10,000 on a big one-time prize pool to attract 1000 teams sounds good in theory. But, after careful planning, forecasting and testing, the results show that the best way is to spread the tournaments out so we reach a larger number of audiences. This consistency and large reach will attract much more than just 1000 teams over a period of time. The best place to do this is by sponsoring streamers and influencers, who each have thousands or even hundreds of thousands of fans.
For the past week, for example, we’ve been running a Valorant Community Tournament with Esports Fight Club’s first partnered streamer, Mika Daime. The turnout has been massive! Qualifier 1 was filled up with the max slots so quickly, that we had to create a Qualifier 2 just to fit all the teams in.
  1. Most streamers we aim to partner with can easily bring in 64 or 256 teams to a community tournament hosted by Esports Fight Club, for a fraction of the price
  2. With the same budget as a big tournament, of the $10,000 we would have spent on a single tournament, we can obtain approximately 540% more users by repurposing that budget for the influencer and streamer tournaments.

Q8) Have you changed your business model? Because at the beginning it was mainly about publishers.
Our fundamental model has not changed: Video publishers attract audiences to watch video content and ads. Users are rewarded for it, thereby increasing engagement and monetization.
This model has not changed. What has changed is the type of video publisher we are pursuing. Prior to COVID-19, we pursued traditional publishers. With COVID-19, we saw the opportunity to pursue gaming publishers and more specifically esports publishers. More importantly, we created our own tournament platform: esportsfightclub.com. This allows us to control our own environment, launch our own proprietary video player, own our video content, run ads on our player, and charge subscription fees as well as take tournament fees.
But actually publishers and content are publishers and content whether it’s gaming or news.

We are adding automated withdrawals for small amounts to the roadmap but first have to complete the swap and add the security protocols. We won’t risk our users’ investments.

No, absolutely not. The simple interest we are paying now is already high.
Q12) Bit confused about the VeraWallet staking rate after March. Can you clarify?
The staking reward rate is 0.1% per day (36.5% per annum) until 31 March 2021 when it becomes 0.07% daily (25.55% pa) until 31 December 2021.

As to Cardano — the liquidity is really small compared to ETH alts. For example on Kucoin it’s volume is less than $2m per day. Even on OKEX it’s only $3m. 50% of Celsius’ volume is on Uniswap which is the majority of the liquidity and is not on any Tier 1 exchanges. Aside from the lack of features that we need for PoV, after our last experience, we are very reluctant to join with mainnets that are generally illiquid. Celsius’s solution is to provide the liquidity themselves through Uniswap which is limiting in our view. We believe sticking with Ethereum is the right way to go and the market seems to agree with this as well.
Q15) The new VOD platform, when is it going to be finished and in use?
We are working on it now and expect it to meet the roadmap target of Q1: see verasity.io for the roadmap.

Q18) Micro tournaments: could you arrange tournaments yourself, like a national tournament for example?
The Esports Fight Club platform is fully self-managed, so yes, you could set up large tournaments and be the admin and sponsor. We would definitely like to see this happen by our community members. This quarter, our admins and developers are focused on A/B testing different tournaments with multiple communities to see if we are missing any critical features demanded by gamers. An article will be coming next week about micro and partnered tournaments. We will explain how these increase platform adoption which benefits both influencers and Esports Fight Club.

Q20) Asking about the “Instant buy and stake feature”. If someone buys $VRA using this system, there is no transaction on the blockchain. You say you buy directly on exchanges but no proof.
Buy backs of VRA do not happen instantly and we don’t announce buy backs in advance to avoid speculation. We don’t share our VeraWallet addresses as we have stated before. We are not going to provide speculators with tools to make a margin on each purchase.

We specifically provide for ALL Foundation tokens, allocated and unallocated, as part of the current circulating supply so this is NOT adding to the circulating supply.

Stripe, Tencent Games, PayPal. The truth is any website can integrate these payment/connexion modules without partnership. You just need to read their website and implement it on your website.
Of course, you can add Stripe and PayPal to any website, but try adding them to a crypto-based website and see how far you get. There are no crypto products websites or related services (other than specific financial services) that are supported by Stripe and PayPal because they are not allowed. To obtain these payment services, you need to have special permission and follow a rigid protocol. And Stripe expressed interest in working with Esports Fight Club to reach out to video publishers with EFC to give us access to video publishers worldwide.
As to TencentGames, you need to get their specific permission for certain tournament events and follow their rules. We would be unable to use their logo and name in our marketing material without this. It’s not simply signing up for them. So yes we consider this a partnership because they plan on additional events with us which they now support.
Working with major brands including PUBGM, Tencent, Athena Gaming and Warmania gave us the clout to include major esport teams in our tournaments who will participate in future tournaments as well: FaZe Clan, Orange, T1, Elementrix, Nova, Onic and others. And now because of the history, Blizzard is prepared to provide licenses for all their major games.
We are also in discussion with peripheral manufacturers to support our marketplace launch later this year. As soon as agreements are reached, we will jointly announce sponsored product peripherals that will be rewarded in our tournaments.
Q25) Some things on your roadmap get pushed forward. Why did do you do this?
Our development team has been together doing projects for over ten years. This is normal in large scale development projects. For example, we decided after the large Esports Fight Club tournaments we put on that we needed to finalize and launch the Video sharing platform prior to some other features on the roadmap because without it we would not be able to take advantage of many opportunities including monetization opportunities of the exclusive VOD content that only we could re-publish and add ads to. This pushed certain product features into Q2. Another example is PoV. Initially we thought we would go with proprietary blockchain because there was no other solution that would allow us to support PoV. That changed with the release by Ethereum of ERC777. As a result PoV timeline targets changed so that it corresponds to the release of ERC777 as well as the ability to use it for the Video sharing platform. So in effect, the video-sharing platform came in _much earlier than expected_which pushed out other features/products to accommodate this change. Business decisions and external events impact on the roadmap and it would do Verasity and the community an injustice if we just blindly followed a roadmap that becomes slightly outdated every quarter and greatly outdated every year. It is this flexibility that allows Verasity to take advantage of new information and technologies in real-time. And to push out new products earlier in the roadmap such as the video-sharing platform.

When will it be a Patented POV?
The average time for a patent to be granted is 3 years. We’ve just started our third year as a pending application so we hope it will be in 2021, however our patent lawyers have told us to expect further delays due to covid. Fortunately this won’t stop the release of Proof of View which can go ahead with ‘patent pending’ protection.

Q27) Will there be an app for download on your phone soon? For Staking. Feeling a little insecure have it online on your website
Actually, our mweb and web applications are much more secure than a mobile app. Mobile apps are much easier to hack. Although we have not been hacked, some users have been hacked via their mobile phones but because we have a manual delay, we were able to stop the loss of tokens. The good news is that now with the swap to ERC777 we can disable any wallets that have stolen VRA and return the VRA to the original user. We do have mobile apps on the roadmap but won’t likely support staking because of the security issue and it is not a priority for us.

Financial status company. There have been coins sold for listing on an exchange (still to come?). Was this something that was not planned (like extra opportunity to get listed) or are funds becoming empty?
Current resources held by Verasity fund the project roadmap for the next 12 months. We forecast reaching profitability in 2021 which will finance the continuing runway thereafter. As you point out not all listing opportunities were included in the forecast and we stated that: “In the future, additional listings and expenses may require sales of VRA from the Foundation Reserve”. Q29) The VoD update is a little bit unclear for me. Maybe you can tell some more about it. To the looks of it, it is a mix between YouTube and twitch but with PoV to earn $VRA.
PoV on VODs is a key feature for us and for our large ad-stack network. While we are growing our partnerships with community tournaments and adding more games and influencers on EsportsFightClub: we want our reruns to be monetized, available at all times on our proprietary platform and browsing page. Think of it the way Twitch highlights previous streamer’s lives automatically but on a larger and customizable library for viewers to earn VRA and for Verasity to monetize via its ad stack.
And we own several terabytes of gaming and esports video content which will launch with the new video platform in Q1. This is actually massive, because on launch we will have a ton of video content to monetize!

We did! Exeedme is an exciting project revolving around gamers personal skill and players betting against themselves (user-centric) that is just at its very inception. They are not competitors as our model (Community, content and tournament centered) has broader purpose and we dont and wont support betting because it will be rejected by many of our partners.
Crowns Token, from Seascape, is a DeFi economy blockchain made for developers building their own online games but who cannot/don’t want to focus on the technical transactional side. Although they are very promising for simple browser and other types of games, they are just not targeting the Esports market and offer, at best, support for upcoming indie-browser games studios.
We would not be able to partner with Exeedme because of betting restrictions but Crowns could be interesting if the games developed are popular with our viewers.
Q34) Are there any plans in the near future (next several months) to list on an exchange that allows full KYC trading for US citizens (e.g. Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Binance US, etc.)?
This is hard for us. The regulatory environment in the US is not friendly. Since we are not regulated in the US, the risk of listing on a US exchange and the SEC bringing a claim is quite high. At this time we are avoiding this. Lets see what happens with the new SEC Chair who is quite familiar with blockchain. Should he articulate straight forward rules that can be followed and which will not be changed every couple of months, we will consider it then.

Very important issue for us and the community. We fully appreciate the necessity for additional volume and liquidity. After the last exchange hack and issues with OKEX, we were thrown off balance but had expected to list on a new exchange by now. Mistakenly we announced prematurely and then ran into the necessity of completing the VRA token swap before we list on a new exchange. Obviously, we want to now avoid having to swap tokens on a new exchange. So right after the majority of the current exchanges we are listed on complete the swap (this month), we will continue with our listing plans. We are well on the way with 2 exchanges but don’t think it’s prudent to provide more information until they announce the listing themselves. The expectation is still for at least one exchange in Q1. Please bear with us on this. We will get there.

New jackpots are coming onto the platform but for upcoming games like Ludo which will be announced later this month.
Q38) Is it possible to create something like a create your own tournament where I can play a 1vs1(or 2v2 5vs5) against another player(s) in any game anytime (like in 30 minutes) and where I can set for example a winning price of 100k VRA. and both players have to send 50k before the game to a smart contract and afterward it automatically gets sent to the winner?
Esports Fight Club allows users to create their own tournaments choosing from the available games list. We are constantly working on expanding the list of available games and are open for suggestions. The players deposit VRA to the Esports Fight Club account and use these funds to send money to the prize pool. It's quite simple to set up and you can do it for any amount and any number of players and as admin, you have complete control of the size of the pot, how it is shared in % for winners when to start, etc. Its a fully self managed platform that works now. Just go in and set it up today!
Q39) Hi Mark, regarding the plans for in-game advertising and in-game rewards this year, could you describe your vision on this? Is Verasity currently discussing this topic with certain game companies, and how exactly would it work in practice once achieved? Any details you can share with us would be highly appreciated!
The way we view in-game ads is our ability to provide our logo or some other image that would be part of the game interface, such as the floor or walls. This already exists and is popular. We are in discussions now with game developers to add Verasity/VRA. This is a high powered marketing tool that will get our name into many gamers’ faces. These are native images in effect. For advertisers that want to use native images inside our broadcasts or VOD, they get stitched into the ad server in parallel to the stream and we get paid for the ad inventory. In-game rewards are still in development but the vision is for users to be able to click on an object in the game and get rewarded for doing so, not dissimilar to clicking on an add and getting a higher CPM.

Do you ever find clients who you just can’t help for one reason or another? How does that usually go down? I've had clients who I knew I would have a limited impact with based on their physical appearance (people who are morbidly obese, have disfigurements, etc...) because online dating is attraction based. I'm upfront with them and we talk about what I can help with and other options for them. They then decide whether or not they'd like to make an appointment. It's incredibly important to me to never be predatory. I've never had a negative review, and I think it's in large part because I try very hard to be fair and honest. My clients trust me, which means that they keep coming back and they refer me to their friends.

Answer to Q above I spend a huge portion of my days convincing (and then teaching) guys how to smile in photos. Girls have been socialized since childhood to smile pretty for photos, and most guys were taught the opposite. Other than smiling, the most common advice I give is going over their photos and showing them exactly what isn't working and how they are being perceived. We then start working on super specific instructions of how to take new photos that will work for them.
Since your business seems to be growing by the sound of it... How do you manage your growing clientele and how do you get paid? Any tax implications at all? Pre covid I did advertising on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit. I've also learned how to do a lot of free marketing. I had a family member who was very I'll with covid, so I stopped marketing campaigns several months ago to focus on my family. I continued seeing clients who made appointments via word-of-mouth, remembered me from Reddit, and repeat customers. Word-of-mouth has been huge. I started paying taxes as a small business within a few months of starting off.
Whats been the most surprising challenge about starting an internet business? Stalkers and doxing attempts. I don't use my full name or my face with my business because in the beginning there were a few people who made doxing threats or people who tried their darnest to find me. There was one guy who somehow got himself into a Discord server I use to play video games on, and DMed several people in the server asking if they knew my real address. It completely changed how I ran my business. I hired someone to show me how to make sure my privacy is safe.
So you are Will Smith in Hitch? hahaha I've been compared to him by my clients. I haven't watched the movie in ages.
I tried setting up a similar business last year called Wingwoman, defunct now but it was interesting. I ran some Facebook/Instagram ads but it got nowhere. What was your return on ads if I may ask? Is guerilla/word of mouth a better way in this market? Thank you. Word of mouth is amazing, so is finding ways to advertise for free. My campaign ads were hit and miss for a long time, but I eventually hired someone who does it professionally to show me what I'm doing wrong. Even if hiring someone to do it for you is out of your price range (and lots of the time it is out of mine), you can usually buy an hour of someone's time to explain to you what you're doing wrong and what you can do to improve. It's always been worth it to me and has made a huge difference.
Are all of your clients straight men? Most of my clients are straight men, after that it's gay women, a few gay men, and then my least common client is straight women (I think I've only had two).
When my client isn't a straight man, we have a conversation before the appointment time. I explain my limitations, and then they decide whether or not they're still interested in keeping the appointment. Most of what I do is help people to market themselves. After that, it's to help (mostly) men how to appeal to women on dating apps.
If not do you feel like you are able to help women and queer people with the same amount of success? The biggest difference is that women (the few I've worked with) want to change their profile to get matches that more align with what they're looking for, and most of the men I get aren't getting enough matches, aren't getting matches they're actually attracted to, or are getting ghosted a lot.

This is awesome. I’ve considered doing this, but I’m not sure how to get started. What age range do you work with mostly? Is there room for a 36 year old to get in this game? What's surprised me the most is a HUGE age range of clients. I assumed that most of my clients would be younger guys. My biggest age group is guys from like 25-32. A close second is guys 18-23, but I have had a surprising number of older men who are getting back into dating and are overwhelmed. My oldest client was 72. He was the best.
How do you start a business when you have 33 cents? All the paperwork, tax forms, all that? I imagine it was all pretty loosey goosey until you had the cash flow to deal with that? In the beginning I wasn't planning on starting a business, I posted to slave labour in the hopes that I would make $20 so I could buy groceries. It blew up. I'm not sure how else to describe it. I was in a persistent state of shock for months. I kept expecting it to end, but every time I reposted was getting more responses. Clients I had already helped started leaving very kind reviews on Reddit, which increased the success of my future posts. When I first made my website it was NOT because I was planning on turning this into a business, I just physically couldn't continue to schedule people through Reddit anymore. There were too many, so I got a website with a built in scheduling app and assumed I'd just use it for a few months. I hired someone on Reddit to teach me about small businesses and how to do the tax forms. This is what I love the most about Reddit, it's this massive community full of knowledge. Whenever I need help understanding something, I always hit up Reddit first.
In person I have no problem engaging and attracting beautiful women. I have, quite literally, never had results with a dating app. Is this common? What common mistakes do you see people making who have great in-person communication skills but fail utterly in online dating? yes. It is very very very common. I have had TONS of clients who do fine in person but struggle with online dating, and they tend to do very well once they recognize what they're doing wrong. If you aren't getting matches, it's almost certainly that you're taking shitty photos that aren't marketing yourself well. If women aren't responding to your initial message it's because it isn't compelling enough, and if you're constantly getting ghosted once conversation starts, it's because you're struggling to quickly build chemistry and get her out on the date. It's difficult to give advice because I'm not sure where exactly you're struggling, so I kept it vague haha.

Have you ever had a client who was either an Incel, MGTOW, or someone who had some ahem misogynistic views of women? omg yes. In the beginning it was pretty common because my prices were very low. Now it's not nearly as common but it crops up every once in a while.
How did you handle those situations, or how did you set boundaries between the client's views and reviewing their profile? I educate them. My services center around teaching men how to appeal to women, which usually entails explaining the female experience on dating apps. With clients who are sexist or racist (how do I get an asian girl/latina girl, etc...), I educate. If they aren't interested in learning, I refund them and end the appointment. I used to struggle with what to do in those situations because I was terrified of them leaving a bad review and destroying my business, but I put on my big girl panties and started telling them to fuck off.

How does your business (or the part of it that deals with helping men talk to women/get women attracted to them) differentiates itself from PUAs? uggh, a huge part of what I do is trying to undo the gross PUA advice that my clients have learned in the past. My advice is actionable and based on marketing and psychology. I don't teach men how to trick women into fucking them. I teach them how to appeal to women by teaching them how women see the world, as well as basic marketing strats when it comes to online dating. At the same time, I also get men with extremely poor boundaries who end up with toxic women... so we also talk about self-respect and dignity and how to maintain it in the dating world.
PUAs base their "teachings" on very harmful ideas about what women are/should be and I was wondering how a more healthier version of that looks like. D&D is my obsession. Don't be afraid to be adventurous. Make a character who feels real to you, and don't be afraid to role-play. It isn't all about being super OP, it's about the role-playing and the experience.

I met my wife online way way back in the early days of it, back in 2002 on a site called kiss.com that later merged with update, which got taken over by match. I can only imagine how sites now are far removed from what they were then. That said, do you feell what you are doing stops it a from being less authentic in some ways? Dating apps aren't authentic. I don't even like to consider dating apps actual dating. I consider them pre-dating. An attractive woman in a fairy large area can easily get 30-50 matches a day, which has a major impact on how she swipes. She can't swipe of every reasonably attractive/interesting guy she sees because then she'd have hundreds of matches. Instead, she is super duper picky and swipes left for small and often stupid reasons... because she has to swipe left on most of her matches.
Answer to Q above I like to explain it like this: you're the hiring manager at your company. You're hiring for 5 positions. You get 200 resumes. Of those, 50 of them are perfect for the job. Great qualifications, education, references. Everything. They're fantastic. Under no circumstances are you going to hire 50 people. Instead you're going to nick pick the hell out of them. Even if the reason you're disqualifying them is unfair or stupid, you're still going to do it... because you have to. This is what it's like for women on dating apps, and why marketing makes such a huge difference. It was really hard dealing with the judgement from other Asians who accused me of white worshipping, and being stereotyped by other white people. It's a rough situation to be in. Here are my thoughts:
​ First, we are certainly socialized as Americans to view Asian men as sexless. They are demasculinized in most forms of media, so spend some time taking an honest look at your own biases and if you have some unpacking to do with regards to race.
I am a 24 y.o woman of east asian descent and I've never really had problems dating but I really struggle with the idea of "white worship." Growing up in an asian-heavy bubble I only dated asian men but after I went to college and got a job, I started dating white men. It's almost impossible to escape judgement from the asian community if you are a woman dating a white dude and its something that I've seen starting to make my relationships really toxic. I realized I have become extremely harsh to the white men I go on dates with, analyzing every little thing they say to make sure it's not racist or fetishizing, nevermind that if an asian guy said the same thing I wouldn't care at all. Second, being attracted to a white man doesn't make you a white worshipper. Trust your instincts, but don't go searching for red flags with every white dude you go out with. We've both probably had enough creepy experiences with ppl who have Asian fetishes to know when we're being objectified. Yes, and we have a frank conversation about it if it comes up. I've had a few clients try to use me as their therapist because I'm a therapist.. but I'm not their therapist. Instead, I send them links to low-cost options in their area and wish them the best. If I don't feel my services could be useful to them, I refund and end the appointment. It's incredibly important to me never to be predatory.
I'm married and not looking for your advice, but I do find this fascinating. Would you consider making something like a documentary with some of your clients? I have a white male friend who is really into asian women. I'm hesitant to introduce him to any of my friends because of the cringe factor. He's kind, smart, and attractive though. I'm curious as to what the market is like for this kind of service. In one year how much revenue were you able to collect? when I worked full time I made between $1000 and $1600 a week, depending on how fully booked I was. I took some time off during covid to take care of my sick family members, so I've had a much smaller work load because I blocked off most of my work hours.

* posed vs spontaneous * a small group photo can be great, but it shouldn't be a large group where it's difficult to point you out, a photo where I can't clearly see you, and you should be the most attractive dude in the photo.
* Other people vs alone (I get no exes or other girls flirting) * if you're looking at the camera, you should be smiling. A cocky or sexy look can also work, but very difficult to pull off
* look at camera (w smile) vs not looking * it's great to demonstrate interests, but (and this is important) your hobbies/lifestyle should ALWAYS be secondary to showing off your most attractive features. Your first priority in every photo should be showing off your most attractive features. Don't take a photo playing the guitar if your mouth is open in a weird way and your eyes are squinted.

Samsung user FINALLY shifted to Xiaomi for the FIRST TIME: MY THOUGHTS

BRIEF HISTORY: I have been using the A series of Samsung starting from Galaxy A10 to the A30, but the one thing that bugged me about Samsung phones especially the A series, was that they weren't giving enough value to their customers. I'm not a big camera guy, so I don't take any selfies. The main priority for me was having a big battery and a performance that didn't lag while i switched between 2-3 apps (Mainly Tidal for music streaming, Whatsapp and Instagram).
The Galaxy A10s on regular use gave me a battery timing of 4-5 hours till I had to plug it back in the charger. After a few weeks of searching, I found some very interesting Xiaomi's phones, the prices with the features they were providing were giving Samsung phones a run for their money. But I was still hesitant as my uncle bought the Xiaomi Mi A3, which tbh, in that price range was an overpriced phone which gave my initial impression that All phones must be like that. But boy oh boy was I wrong.
The Phone Itself:
I bought the Xiaomi Redmi 8A for less than $98. 2 gb 32 gb variant with a 5,000mAh battery with a support for 18W Fast charging. The only gripe I had was the fast charger isn't included in the box. Powered by Snapdragon 439 chipset, which imo is SOOO much better than the Mediatek A22 shit chipset. After buying the phone I did two things to improve the overall quality:
But, after all of this, I can safely say this is the BEST phone I have gotten so far. The battery backup is insane. If I use the phone at 9 am, use it heavily all day either on wifi or 4g, doesn't matter, the battery will still be at 45-50% at 3:45 am. A whopping 16 hours+ on continuous usage.
When you remove the bloatware, it frees up alot of RAM and your phone feels like it's a 4GB Ram variant and not 2GB. Im not a fan of gaming like PUBG, never played it. So don't know how the phone will perform on gaming.
P.S, I've never been able to completely drain the battery of this device. It's a MONSTER.
My final verdict:
If you want a KILLER device for your day to day use, you're a battery conscious person like me, want to gift it to your parents, or need to give a gift to somebody that won't break your bank, then this DEVICE is a BEAST. I HIGHLY recommend you invest in Xiaomi and you won't be feeling sorry. I do recommend getting the Xiaomi Redmi Note series if you can as those devices are the midrange killers. But if you want to stay on a budget level, then this device kills all other devices.

KaiOS must not die (this is the cry of a fire fox that wants to rise again)

I've seen and tried everything from our community's open source projects: I made a phone call using a prototype of a SIP client to make a free phone call from Italy to Ukraine in January 2019 (Batty app by LuxFerre, still in alpha). I played Super Mario and other GameBoy Color games (I'm not much of a gamer, but many are using the KaiBoy app right now) on my Nokia 8110 4G. I met the first developer from France (Sylvain) who adapted WeboGram, a working client for Telegram in late 2018 (you don't have it yet) on KaiOS, and we were the first to use WhatsApp outside of India, five months earlier (December 2018) of the official release on KaiStore (May 2019), when everyone considered KaiOS a rip-off (a year of promises to release the application globally, and a long waiting and disappointment from everybody).
With this I just want to emphasize how simple and malleable KaiOS is.
I love KaiOS! All BananaHackers love KaiOS! Everyone who follows us has learned to love KaiOS!
All the applications of the operating system are basically websites in offline version, the "webapps", and the ever increasing number of developers for this sector is constantly growing.
Web development is something within everyone's reach, as the programming language is simple, unlike Android apps. For example, WhatsApp for KaiOS weighs around 700 KB, while the Android version over 25 MB. Few lines of code and files to compile. Less work for more experienced developers. More opportunities for everyone to learn.
KaiOS could use all this to its advantage, but the KaiStore is the only officially recognized way to transfer new apps and services to these devices, and at the same time it's also a hindrance to itself.
The applications loaded on the KaiStore are mainly dedicated to games and entertainment, but there are also applications classified as "utilities", that should improve the efficiency of these phones. Utility that vanishes every time appear the KaiAds, the advertisements, the only earning opportunity that KaiosTech offers to new developers.
That's right, everyone deserves to be recognized for their efforts and all the work they've done, but unfortunately these advertisements penalize what the user experience is, on these small screens.
Those who buy a KaiOS device are looking for simplicity, without too many sacrifices.
So if it's so easy to develop webapps, why is the KaiStore so full of mostly useless apps?
The truth is that there are some projects that are rejected by the KaiStore, as they do not respect the upload rules. At KaiosTech, developer portal moderators are constantly working to enforce standards. The demand is high, also thanks to the push of the company that wants to convince developers to insert many more ads in their apps, allowing them to monetize.
Implementing advertisements can help you earn money, but penalizes the actual use of these applications. On a 320x240 resolution screen all you need to focus on is usability, and KaiOS devices have this kind of display.
KaiosTech should focus more on the quality of its product, rather than worsening its usability.
There are other ways to make money with webapps, for example through donations, at least with free and open source software. This experiment is underway with our new third-party app store, created to permanently replace the B-Hackers Store: the BananaHackers WebStore (http://store.bananahackers.net) , also accessible from the main page of our site, BananaHackers.net. A developer can also feel free to add a PayPal link within their app and on the site page, for anyone who wants to offer them a free donation, and there is also the option to add screenshots to preview the content of the application. But what matters most is the developer's sense of accomplishment towards the open source community.
However, I don't want to write a new post to advertise the alternative store, but I would like more cooperation from KaiosTech itself.
We know very well the hidden potential of KaiOS, but as long as it remains hidden, closed by the limitations imposed by KaiosTech for reasons of commercial partnership with its major investors, KaiOS will always and only remain the parody of an operating system for mobile devices, and consequently not will never, ever compete with Android and iOS.
KaiosTech should review its rules on allowed uploads, for example by adding OmniSD to the KaiStore and thus also delegating the sideloading of third party apps to external sources, thus generating more interest.
I now turn to KaiosTech and all its brilliant developers: do we all want to bring KaiOS to the fore?
Mozilla, creating Firefox OS, left you a huge heredity!
Many functions that we, BananaHackers, have discovered through external research, on our own, are all things that already existed in the operating system itself!
So, wake up folks!
KaiOS must be in the place it deserves!
Why waste this opportunity?
Let us make the most of the potential of web applications!
Allow free and open source projects to enter the KaiStore, giving everyone the opportunity to grow the operating system! Telegram, emulators, applications for VoiP ... these are just some of the many things I have seen and tried together with the members of the BananaHackers community, and which have made KaiOS a very special operating system, the best among mobile devices! In my eyes and in the eyes of those who follow us. And you know it well!

You really should start a YT channel with your adventures man, a guy on a motor driving through the world, and the lessons you learned, are definitely worth it! Hello! I don't ride everyday. Do you have plans on when this will end and if you intend on returning to work do you worry about the perception on this time by employers? I guess, I also want to ask if you have concerns about whether you think you could adapt to fulltime work again or you'd struggle mentally now? Not sure if i can go back to a 9-5 life but I really don't care right now about future employment opportunities. I believe that the world is filled with lots of people with certificates and degrees and professional expertise...but there are not so many with unique life experiences. I hope employers will look at the individual more than the hours i spent behind a desk, when the time will come.
So are you going to end up in an even crappier job after abandoning all of your responsibilities like this? Haha who knows! What I know is that whatever job you do...it is still a job. More money means more responsibilities but at the end of the day, a job is a job. It's the meaning that changes your life. It's the why you do what you do, that drives you. Not necessarily the job you perform. We all end up in the same place...so I will do whatever job makes me happy when the time comes.
Hey op... If you're still answering questions I'm curious as to...What do you do to entertain yourself when you're tenting every night? I can imagine there's much internet connection in the middle of nowhere in Canada. Read a lot of books or something? Not answering questions anymore, but this is an excellent one, that deserves a reply. Well, if you are camping in the wild, definitely there would probably be no internet access. I usually write my thoughts and daily events on a notepad. It s hard to find time to do that, so when you are alone in your little tent waiting for the night to come, getting your thoughts out on a paper usually helps the catharsis. I am not much of a reader...but sometimes a good movie (i may have some stuff saved previously on hard drives or netflix offline) could kill the extra hour you get before falling asleep. I mean, usually it's just such a pity to ruin the silence with music and images...so most of the times i fall asleep as soon as I lay horizontally. Other times, the writing thing helps soothe the adrenaline of the day and calm you enough to fall asleep too. Sometimes organizing takes a bit of time or taking care of the bike can take some time as well.
This was one of my favorite AMAs. Thank you for doing this. Where did you stay in Greece and while in quarantine did you At least get to leave at all or were you confined to your apartment? Spent 3 months in Crete! Amazing island! Government started to ease up the lockdown only after the first month. We did only had 7 cases in the whole island so i got a great deal with my choice of location! I managed to explore the whole island by the end of it.

That place is amazing. It’s one of my favorite islands in Greece. If you ever have a chance check out Milos and Naxos. Yes! I almost went to Milos! And Naxos looked like a true paradise. You guys are blessed with natural beauty!
Wow I’m really impressed and inspired! I am currently planning a solo trail trip across the US, (and hopefully further) it’s been my dream for forever! Can you just break down for me a couple things? Ok, like what are some absolutely essential items you carry that most people wouldn’t think of? Besides the basics like fire starter, tent/tarp, thermal clothing etc. Next, how would you respond to a crisis or threat on the road that normally wouldn’t occur in a conventional lifestyle? Like authorities fuccin with you or wild animals attacking or something? One concern I have is that people may look down upon me for my lifestyle choice and use that as an excuse to treat me badly. I mean, some people already kinda do and I haven’t even left yet. (Even if everybody did I would still go cause HAHAHA fucc it) Anyway, another question-What is the best part of your travel lifestyle so far? I imagine it’s a lot of fun, (although still intensely difficult) and that tramps have found a lot of interesting ways to spend their free time. EDIT: AHH sorry one more I forgot! What are your favorite spots around the world but especially the US that you think are worth seeing? (any other tips/pointers/things to remember that you can think of are welcome too) THANKS Ok, lots of good questions! There is no essential item to be carried that is the "magic stuff" that nobody has. Maybe Common Sense...yes. carry that with you and you ll be fine always. ;) In terms of tools, cable ties and duct tape...and I would say super glue. Everything else mate, you ll adapt or find your way around it. About crisis, like protests, riots, police messing with you...well sometimes you gotta just leave! Haha. I rode through some riots in Bolivia and I kind of snuck away...as smoothly as possible. I always use my helmet cam, as a deterrent for police. If they are trying to get some money out of you, the "I am recording you" effect sometimes could make them change their mind. Also, I would make plastified copies of your driver license and bike docs, just in case you find some dodgy road blocks on your way. In case they withheld your stuff, you can just leave without having them keeping you hostage with your papers.
Most of the times you'll be fine though. Those are rare occasions anyway. And so wild animal encounters. When I went to Alaska, a friend gave me a bear spray. Never use it. Just keep your food away from your tent. Again, common sense works better than any weapons.
My favourite spot in the US was Sequoia NP. But I really loved the high deserts of Nevada and also New Mexico. So much good stuff to see in the US!
The best part of this lifestyle is the fact that you are free to do whatever you want everyday... And this is also a huge advantage that comes only travelling alone. All those "haters" will disappear as soon as you are gone from their sight. Your life is yours and you can do whatever you want with it. Only people that have some personal issue will try to diminish what you are trying to achieve. Others will just project their fears to you. In any case, you gotta go your own way and be focused on what you are trying to achieve.
Was it expensive shipping your bike? Also any trouble getting into other countries crossing the border? The shipping from Australia to South america was quite dear. I remember paying $2400 AUD. Not sure if it's expensive or not...but they did take care of almost everything. From Canada to Ireland instead i flew with Air Canada Cargo which had a special $1500 USD for the bike and myself. A bargain!! No troubles at the borders
How does it feel living life just visiting countries. No 9-5 whatsoever, no bills, no worries at all, just you and your motorcycle? People say that Sex or food is the best feeling in the world. I think that Riding your motorcycle freely around the world, tops it all.
I cannot imagine myself traveling without internet access. Do you have worldwide roaming? Do you get a SIM in every country? It's unthinkable nowadays to NOT have internet access. With local and cheap Sim card you can get data everywhere really and most countries in SA have sometimes free wifi around town and in gas stations. You'll be just fine.

Thanks for your reply! So I assume that with limited/spotty data, you were relying mostly on offline maps and navigation. Any tip on what's best for this kind of traveling and exploration? there are some useful travel app like maps.me, gmaps and iOverlander. have a look at it. lots of good info.
I also have a 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure, but the R version. I also love my bike and stoked to hear how reliable it’s been for you! What repairs have you had to do along the way? What repairs!! Haha bike has been exceptional. I only had to repair seals and moving parts (chain, sprokets, etc). Water pump seals have to be replaced around 85k km and i had a oil temp sensor failure at 140k km. Most people don't get that far with their miles...but if you do, make sure to check your water pump seals. Most parts are available in capital cities in any country. Others, you just have to have those shipped to you or plan in advance (for tyres for instance). Pretty doable overall.
What does a legitimate Italian pizza look and taste like compared to western pizza? Italian pizza is better because of mozzarella and tomato sauce that they use when making it. Top quality stuff. Aside from that, pizza is good wherever. It depends also on how you like your pizza.
I hope to have the courage to also do something like this. What are some valuable things you’ve learned about solo travel? Things you wished you knew starting off. We tend to overthink a lot of stuff that eventually never happen. We always have fears that stop us...but in reality, all those bad thought are simply possibilities that may actually never really happen. Do you ever have any regrets? Lately I have been good in that sense. But maybe one day I ll wake up and have some...for not chosing the standard path of the average guy with wife and kids.
Maybe a bit of a selfish question but do people in N. America have trouble pronouncing your name? My Italian-American husband and I named our 5 month old Paolo. We live in Brooklyn so most people around us don't have an issue but I am not sure what it will be like if we ever move somewhere else or when he starts school. Also it's a beautiful name and I'm going to make sure to show our son your photos when he is old enough to understand travel and places and different people. :-D BEST QUESTION EVER! ahha
your son is going to have a tough time in an english speaking country! haha Jokes aside, the sound "Pao" doesn't really exists in english speaking people's head...so most of the time I get called Paulo...or Pablo. Which is fine to me. But the correct pronunciation is Pà-olo with emphasis on the first syllable. I switched to Paul many times...
But aside from USA, Canada, UK, Australia and South Africa, your son will be just fine!
Also make sure he knows the the origins of the meaning of his name. Paolo was one of the closest friends of Jesus. His real name was Sauro, which means "the greatest", but then, after befriending Jesus, he changed his name in Paolo, which comes from the latin word Paulus, that means "small, tiny". I am not religious, but Indeed this story tells a bit of the significance of being humble.
U/paolo_0 what about sex and romantic relationships- friendships too. Do you maintain any relationships? If so, how do you maintain them? The romantic factor is almost inevitable when travelling so extensively. Eventually every traveller has a romantic affair with somebody that he/she met on the way. Weather is a local or another traveller, it is our natural tendency to mate, so...yeah. Kind of a tricky one! I personally tend to avoid to get into serious situations because my lifestyle is simply not compatible with conventional standards of monogamous relationships. The curse of the traveller is that you always have to leave...so it is counterproductive to get close to somebody and then drag that feeling for months, with you on the road. In my opinion it shifts the paradigm of travelling towards a specific and more visceral feeling of reuniting with a person that most likely is not going to be on your planned route.
Anyway, said this, i did have a long distance relationship before starting this trip and it sucked! Haha Hence I tend to avoid to make the same mistakes twice. But also...you can never plan when to fall in love. Sometimes it just happens and you gotta roll with it. It hurts and it may even change your plans. Eventually one has to choose between the new person and the continuity of your solo trip.
what country did surprise you the most (good or bad) with their roads? did you come to Portugal? what did you dislike the most I loved Scotland! I had a great deal of luck with the weather...so that may have played a role. I did come to Portugal and it actually surprised me a lot!! Absolutely loved it! Hello! First off, this is incredible, and a dream of mine. Unfortunately i'm an american with a crap load of college debt! I read your other answers and I just had a couple questions! 1. You mentioned your first night camping in a campground, and how it wasn't the best setting. As time went on did you just start setting up on the side of the road? or were there any other challenges finding camping spots when there wasn't a campsite hostile friends couch etc? 2. How safe did you feel when you were mostly alone camping in between citys/towns? Thank you so much for doing this AMA, hopefully one day I can do this! Hey! I am aware of how the US system sucks you in a world of debts but... I hope you will one day break free from it.
After my first night camping, I switched to couchsurfing and hostels right away. I was terrified of camping! ahha Then, one day I found a spot that was too beautiful to leave. I was by myself and It was quite remote. The balmy temperatures, the starry night and the beautiful sunrise over the ocean made me reconsider camping. After few more attempts I found out that camping in the wild was waaay better than sleeping in a crappy hostel or at some stranger's home. More privacy, quieter and cheaper too! Luckily for me, I had lost my camping virginity in Australia, one of the best and safest countries for camping in the world in my opinion. You are by yourself most of the times. Half of my trip around Australia I slept on the side of the road or in the bushes. I became an expert in starting small fires and cooking with no utensils. I realized that the "danger" in terms of safety for me and my motorcycle was directly related to the amount of people around me. So, the more desolated the area, the safest. I've been following your IG for about a year now I think, and I'm totally jealous. You've answered a few questions of mine on there, but I've got one for this AMA. Has KTM reached out to you for any kind of buyback type of deal for the bike, or any "free" stuff? Are they even aware? Do they care? I mean you're doing great advertising for them. I think I read something not too long ago where a man had a million-mile Honda Goldwing that Hinda wanted to buy back from him for research or something. Nope. KTM hasn't got in touch with me about bike endorsement. Saying this, tbe guys at KTM canada helped me a lot in servicing the bike while I was in Montreal.
KTM and Honda, or BMW have thousands of loyal customers that used their machines for long time. But they are not really obliged to reach out and saying "Thanks, here s a new bike". It would be a loss for them to give you free stuff.
What would you say is the key to happiness? I believe that to realise that we are insignificant and that nothing is meant to come our way, is the paradigm that we need to have to improve our sense of happiness. I found out that our constant sense of being unaccomplished comes from the high expectations that society places in our mind. We need to get always bigger, better, more stuff...but in reality it's an ephemeral race against ourselves. When you realise that we are just a little grain of dust, floating in the universe and that we matter little or nothing at all in this universe, everything coming your way becomes a gift. I found out that having less makes me happier and less worried.
I am not sure if this is the KEY to happiness for everybody, but I believe that keeping your feet on the ground, helps a great deal.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what kind of bank account do you have? Is it one that can be used internationally? And have you had any problems with converting your money to the currency of whatever country you’re in? Also what kind of a drone and phone do you have? Do you use your phone for most of your IG pics or your drone? I have citybank account and debit card that can be used internationally. I mostly withdraw money from ATMs and use paypal for online transactions.
Never had problems in converting into local currency.
I have a DJI Mavic Air and a Samsung Galaxy S9. I mostly use my phone for my photography, but these days, it is plenty in terms of resolution and image quality, if you share your content on social media. Occasionally I had some photos taken with a DSLR.
I have been following you on Instagram before. We have had very short conversations few times. Remember the dog which was chained all the times for more than a decade in the island in Greece? Any news from it? Do you plan on starting a patreon account so you can earn money on the way? And how hard is it now in the pandemic? Hey there!! Unfortunately that dog is still chained there. I spoke with several dog rescue centers and they couldn't do much about it. Ignorance is not curable Unfortunately.

In planning for the trip, do you think about and have a backup plan for medical emergency or if you are jailed in some remote location? For example, money to bribe you out of a situation at a border or caught speeding. Accident and hospital stay. Also, was language a major barrier during the trip? Wow. Nope. Did not think about those things...haha but maybe I should have had! I do have a travel insurance that cover accidental hospitalization. Language wasn't a major deal breaker for me since i speak spanish and portuguese. Otherwise english is pretty common nowadays
Do you get lonely? Sometimes. When I do, I use reddit. ;) Jokes aside, I actually appreciate the time when I am truly alone. Finding those moments is a rarity, these days.
I also quit my job and sold everything. For me, it was to leave Canada and move to Tahiti. Isn't it liberating and freeing to give everything up to start over? Its not easy to give up everything for a calculated risk. For some it turns out poorly, but for others, its the best decision they have ever made. I've never seen anybody giving it a shot and turning out with something less. You always learn something about yourself...and it's always a great thing to clean up and start fresh!

Care to share your favorite recipe? Thai papaya salad. Shred green papaya, 1 carrot, 6 green beans. Prepare dressing with fish sauce, teaspoon of sugar, garlic (a lot), chili (a lot), and maybe 3-4 lime juices. Add few dried small shrimps and few sliced cherry tomatoes if you want, to garnish. Add a handful of peanuts.
How do you carry/retrieve money? I know in the US and such you can just go to an ATM or a bank, but in South America was it easy to withdraw your money? Did you have to pay much in fees? And I don't know if it is appropriate to ask if you carry a lot of cash with you haha It is the same everywhere in the world. there are bank circuits like MAESTRO or CIRRUS or VISA or MASTERCARD which are available worldwide. You can get money out of ATMs sometimes without fees if banks are affiliated.
Do you battle with a sense of purposlessness or dislocation? I clearly felt a sense of lack of purpose when I was living my normal life. A job sometimes absorbs you but doesn't really give you a reason to live. After my travels I can say that I found a new meaning to my life. I don't think I have to procreate...of find a partner. I think solitude and this kind of life suits me and gives me purpose, better than the one I had before to be honest.

By your own experience, do you think it would be safe enough to do this as a solo young woman? As I met several other solo travellers, including women, which share with me their personal experiences, I can say that it is indeed safe to travel alone as a woman.
What of your original motorcycle is left? Considering you would have undoubtedly had to have replaced bits Bike is still in original shape and form. Replaced the windshield and some inner plastics. But most of it is still the same. Never touched the engine
How much did you pay for your motorcycle? I bought it in December 2014. It was second hand. Had only 700 km on it though. Paid $19k Australian. You do the math in your currency. I saved for 8 months and sold my old bike to be able to buy it.
What about love? Do you sometimes feel like you would like to have someone with you on your trip? Nah. I am good. I thought about rescuing a stray dog or cat a couple of times...
Did you ever read Jupiter's Travels, or meet Ted Simon? Nope. But I heard it's a great book. He's one of the first guys that went around the world in modern times...
Why such a high performance motorcycle? I just bought my dream bike. the trip came afterwards...and I just used the bike I had.

I plan to go on a motorcycle adventure in South America in the near future and I have to ask: were you afraid at any point? I live in Brazil, which is a very dangerous country, I ride mostly in my own city but sometimes I find myself very afraid, and there are places that I don't dare to go. I often wonder how would I deal with these problems being thousands of miles away from home. Yes mate. Brazil was probably the spookiest country I rode through in latin america. But danger is mostly concentrated in big cities, as you know... South america is pretty safe and generally speaking people will be more willing to help you than harm you. Do not worry too much. I was concerned about my safety too before my departure but then i realized that tv and news just gave me the wrong idea.
Haven’t seen this asked.... Do you carry a weapon? Have you ever been in a dangerous situation with thugs? I do not carry weapons. I am against weapons in general, but being from Europe this is kind of the way we grow up here. I assume you are from the USA... But no, there is no need to protect yourself till the point you have to risk your life to do it. If somebody wants to take my stuff and has a gun, I will happily give my stuff to him/her. It's just stuff. I wouldn't shoot anybody anyway.

I love USA and I've travelled throughout the country, other than living in it for few years. I met incredibly inspiring people and i ve also learned so much from your way of living. I do understand the reason behind carrying a weapon. It makes sense there. USA is a massive country and there is a sense of need of protecting yourself in many ways. In most of USA people grow up with weapons because...of hunting! It's part of the culture and I respect it. Considering also that you are allowed to carry a weapon and shoot for self defense in many states... But around the world we just assume nobody has a weapon...so yeah, it works either way.
PuggerHugger123: Are you still using your Australian license plate? Im assuming you might get issues at borders or weird looks from people in different countries. I live in europe and our license plates have a letter representing our country (as you have probably seen). I have also seen some non-EU license plates from eastern europe, but thats it... mccannisms: I was wondering this too - I was told to not bring my bike from Canada to Aus permanently as part of the roadworthy involves checking the frame by drilling into it and would possibly completely damage said frame. How does insuring a bike for international travel work? Ok, I still have my NSW license plate on. People don't care. At the border they just check if the name on your bike papers is the same on your driver license/passport. If so, you are good to go. You can import ANY vehicle in Australia I believe as far as you owned the vehicle at least for one year. Then there is the inspection and everything, but if there is a similar vehicle already in the country, it doesn't need to be tested for "roadworthiness". As per insurance, you have to get one for every country you enter. Except EU where you get the "Green card" which is valid for all Eu countries.

I’ll be doing a similar thing in a few years, I was worried about going out on a brand new bike (Yamaha Tenere 700) absolutely love this bike but after hearing your story about going on a big ass brand new KTM you give me hope! I was worried about it possibly being stolen somewhere.. apart from parking it inside wherever possible do you have any other tips? Do you use disk lock/use a bike cover? And also.. do you not think your bike is a bit too big? Are you able to pick it up ok and does it ever limit some of the off road routes you may want to take? Really inspirational story mate.. it’s all I dream about, I’ve backpacked to like 65 countries and within the past few years realised overland motorcycle adventure is where the fun really is.. the freedom! Hey mate, congrats on your bike selection. I've heard great stuff about the T7. About the "bike getting stolen" issue...it's not really a thing. Just be careful in big cities and if if you leave it parked with your belongings on it for too long. I mean...seriously just common sense. the 1190 is big and heavy but I managed. When fully loaded it floats around 300kg so yeah...not a walk in the park... but most of the times I was fine. Just sand riding gets hard. In case, make sure you always park inside the property where you stay at night and remove all your belongings from it, even if you decide to go for hard panniers (which I don't recommend). Unfortunately, if somebody wants to steal your bike there's very little/nothing you can do about it. But again, most of the times you'll be fine.
I guess this is more of a question in general rather than specifically related to your journey on the motorcycle. But how did you manage leaving behind family and friends to pursue your own lifestyle? Im a bit envious of the whole experience, but I also can't imagine living more than 100 miles away let alone living in multiple different countries and traveling the world. Was it difficult to do? Or did your family and friends support or need you in any way that wouldn't be doable with you travelling, or was it simply "this is what I want" and you go do it without much of a care? It is hard to leave your family and lifelong friends behind to pursue a dream...but it is the price to pay for these kind of experiences.
Sometimes it s hard to be by yourself and to realize that you are alone, far away from people who love you and support you no matter what...but it is also a forging experience to be so exposed. It builds character and it allows you to become more independent, which is a key point for any kind of relationship in your life.
It is difficult and scary and all of the above. But it is a necessary process for personal growth and development.
Your family and friends will understand you...and support your choices if they truly love you.
Hey Paolo, great story and a wonderful thing to do! I also love riding trough different countries, and my big dream is it, to ride from Monaco di Baviera to SEA. So here‘s my question: how do you get all the permits for entering countries? Visa etc? Ever had any passport/visa issues? Especially with corona lockdowns? Ever entered somewhere over the green border? Do you have any kind of bike/health insurance? Have a good ride. Stay save! If you happen to be in Monaco, let me know for dinner and a bed:) Cheers mate!! If you plan on riding to SEA from here, you will need a Carnet de Passage for your vehicle. Get in touch with the automobile club of your country for more info...but it is not cheap. Visawise, as german, you won't have any issues entering countries. Simply google "visa allowances german citizens" and wikipedia will tell you what to do and how to prepare for your trip. Never had any issues at the border so far. Only in USA maybe. Haha They didn't like the fact that I wanted to tour their country for more than 3 months. I have a worldwide travel insurance with worldnomads which covers me in case of hospitalization. Bike insurance have to be issue in every country you ride in. But i think in germany there may be a worldwide insurance for motorcycles too. You need to check there. Now with covid all travels are restricted. May have to wait a bit for your adventure.
How does your family feel about feeding and housing you with the money they work for while you go ride your bike? Did you think about them when you threw your financial stability away? Would you go back to work if they threw you out on the street? Did you know that in the eyes of an employer you lose your degree when you dont use it for 4 years? And, they also won't hire you for lesser positions because you are over qualified. Thanks for your lovely question. I support myself for my travels and my family can take care of itself. I tried to send money back, but they seem to be fine without me. I do not need to be financially stable to be happy. I believe my family is ok to simply let me sleep in my backyard with my tent, in case they don't want me in their house anymore. Otherwise yeah. I may look for a job to pay rent...or a workaway experience. I do not want to work for an employer that diminishes my expertise because i decided to live my life instead of sitting in front of a computer for 4 years. I also do not have to go back to the same industry I was working before. Do i need a computer engineering degree to be a brick layer? I wont be so sure about the overqualified thing. I got hired as truck washer with my degree in engineering.
Hey man, what you are doing is cool. One small question, how about your life insurance? Since you are travelling to different countries, how do you manage it? Not knowing your lifestyle b4 this adventure, What specifically did you notice you had to adjust immediately? Protein and water obviously but what did you find you were going to really need to keep going? I actually noticed that i didn't need so much food to keep going. Water yes...but food intake could be minimized. When you don't have your 9-5 routine anymore, you can simply eat whenever you want...without fixed hours. In the long run you ll simply adapt to new food intake quantities which are usually less than a regular working man.
How do you go about servicing your bike? I change the oil in my bike every 6 months regardless of kms, sometimes its only does about 2000kms in between those services. I service my bike every 7000km. sometimes even 10000km. but my bike holds 4kg of oil in the engine so it is quite a lot. like a small size car.

"No mechanical or electrical issues in the whole trip." Seriously? That's amazing! Not a single mechanical issue? Zero mechanical issues. I fried my engine oil temp gauge around 140k km...but that was an easy fix. Found it used online for 40 bucks and that was about it.

Have you ever been really scared that you've driven into a place where you could get robbed or worse? Rode through a couple of favelas in Brazil...by mistake. And yes, eventually the thought of getting stopped and "questioned" crossed my mind. But fortunately nothing happened.
What is your favorite food you ate while traveling and what's the best place you have been? I am a sucker for a good Chevice (raw seafood). Although it seems that the best chevice is Peruvian, I loved mexican one. I mean, I probably had the best one in Baja. Absolutely mind blowing.
Meat based stuff instead I have to say that Hornado in Ecuador can't be beat. Mouth watering stuff. And I am not a big fan of meat.
Have you had any negative experiences through your journey? (Violence, theft, etc) Negative experiences were maybe 1% of the whole thing. Just lessons to be learned and move on, really. Nothing really too bad.
Did you get your tools back? The one's that were stolen a while back in Vancouver? Nope. Had to buy new ones. Ouch

do you wear “riding gear” with pads, etc. when on the motorcycle? Yes I do. But it's not absolutely necessary to do so. I rode around Australia with jeans and tshirt. Not safe, but yeah... The problem with not wearing protection is the "trip stopper" factor. Let's say you get into an accident. If nothing happens it's all good. But if you are wearing sneakers and not boots, you are most likely to hurt yourself. And that could stop your trip for a month or more. So, yeah. Not necessary, but definitely recommended
