Avalon or Two Harbors for one day trip to Catalina Island?

I'll be going to Catalina Island in the near future. It'll be a one day trip, so do you recommend taking the ferry to Avalon or to Two Harbors for a first time visitor? Also, any recommended activities or attractions for a day trip other than hiking? Thanks!
